Sources I have gathered and information I have learned since I made the posts on my LOVEN ancestors.

Census Sunday #8

This weeks census image actually requires 3 images to get the information on the individual people. They're from the 1925 Iowa state census. (image 1) (image 2) (image 3) Although it doesn't say, these pages are for Glenwood township, Winneshiek county.

This page has things like relationship to head, gender, race, age, marital status, & literacy

This page has place of birth as well as names & places of birth for parents.

This page shows military service, occupation, & church affiliation.

The family from these images I'm descended from is on lines 64-67. It shows Henry Loven as a 34 year old man who has spent his whole life in Iowa. It also cites Henry as having attended grade school through the 8th grade & able to read and write. He is shown to be the son of John & Mary (LYSTAD) LOVEN, who were both born in Norway. It also shows that John & Mary were married in Iowa. It also shows, on the lines for both Lloyd & Orval, that Henry & Clarissa were also married in Iowa. Henry is shown as having no military service, but is cited as being engaged in "agricultural pursuits" (he was a farmer).

The census cites Clarissa as a 31 year old woman (& wife of Henry) who has also spent her whole life in Iowa. Clarissa is cited as also attending grade school through the 8th grade & also of being able to read & write. She is shown as being the daughter of Martin & Andrine (EVENRUD) HENDRICKSON, who were both born in Norway. Martin & Andrine are shown as being married in Iowa. Clarissa is cited as "engaged in domestic and Personal Services" on the census.

Lloyd is cited as being the 6 year old son of Henry & Clarissa. Lloyd is cited as having attended grade school through 1st grade & can't read or write yet.

Orval is cited as the 4 year old son of Henry & Clarissa. Orval is also (not surprisingly) cited as having not attended school at all yet. The family is cited as being Protestant (Lutheran to be exact.)

There is one other family on these images I'm related to on lines 89-90. Ole LOVEN is cited as a 56 year old man who was born in Norway, has been in the US for 46 years, & Iowa for 45 years. He attended grade school through the 6th grade & is able to read & write. Ole is cited as being the son of Aslak & Anna (SKAIM) LOVEN, both of whom were also born in Norway. Aslak & Anna are also cited as being married in Norway. Ole is cited as having no military services & like his nephew above as being engaged in "agricultural pursuits" (he was also a farmer). Ole's wife Emma (short for Ingeborg) is cited as being a 54 year old woman who was born in Iowa & has been in Iowa for 45 years. She also attended grade school through 6th grade & can read & write. She is cited as the daughter of Halvor & Asper (GORDON) ENGRAV, both of whom were born in Norway. Halvor & Asper (or Asberg) were also married in Norway. Emma is cited as  "engaged in domestic and Personal Services." The family is cited as being Protestant.

Aslak and Anna LOVEN

I'm covering both of my great-great-great grandparents in the LOVEN line in this post. They are the LOVENs that decided to leave Norway for Iowa.

Aslak (Aslag) was born as Aslak OLSEN LOVEN (the 2 names explained on my post about John LOVEN) on 27 May 1826 in Aurland, Nodre Bergenhus (now Sogn og Fjordane), Norway to Ole ASLAKSEN and Signe ALVSDATTER.

Aslak is number 46.  The translation is "Date of birth 27 May [1826], date of baptism 28 Jun, name Aslack, born in wedlock, parents cotter Ole ASLAKSEN and Signe ALVSDATTER LOVEN, witnesses Trjer ALVSEN, Ivar ALVSEN, Knud ELLINGSEN, og Marie GJERTSDATTER LOVEN, also Ingebor ASLAKSDATTER BEIRGUM."

Anna was born as Anna JOHANNESDATTER SKAJEM on 21 Jun 1828 in Aurland, Nodre Bergenhus, Norway to Johannes ANDERSEN and Methe NIELSDATTER.

Anna is number 47.  The translation is "Date of birth 21 June [1828], date of baptism 29 June, name Anna, parents farmer Johannes ANDERSEN and Metthe NIELSDATTER SCHAJEM [SKAJEM], witnesses Ole ANDERSEN SCHAJEM, Jens ENOCHSEN VIGESLAND, Gjert TORJURSEN LOVE, Martha ERICHSDATTER SCHAJEM, Bergilda NEILSDATTER VIGESLAND, and Anna NEILSDATTER SCHAJEM."

Aslak and Anna were married 31 May 1858 in Aurland, Nodre Bergenhus, Norway.

Aslak and Anna's marriage is number 5. Translation "Wedding date 31 May [1858] The wedded couple Unwed man Aslak OLSEN LOVEN [age 32] and unwed woman Anna JOHANNESDATTER [age 29], his fatehr Ole ASLAKSEN, her father Johannes OLSEN, best man Lars INGVARDSEN and Johannes OLSEN SKAJEM, annoucements dates May 16, 24, and 30; wedding requested by groom when vaccinated for smallpox."

Aslak and Anna had 4 children before they came to America in 1869: Sigrid "Sarah" on 4 Jul 1861, Johannes on 2 Nov 1862, Metta on 5 Jan 1865, and Ole on 14 Mar 1868. They set sail on 12 Apr 1869 on the bark Alma and landed in Quebec on 1 Jun 1869. (The passenger list is at norwayheritage.com.) After settling around Decorah, Iowa, Aslak and Anna had 2 more children Nels Johannes on 15 May 1872 and Hannah on 10 Oct 1875. They stayed living on their farm in Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa and the Decorah area for the rest of their lives. Aslak died 24 Oct 1900 in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa. while Anna lived for a few more years and died 21 May 1910 in Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. I do not have obits for either one of them, but they both do have memorials up on findagrave [Aslak and Anna].

Before his death, Aslak did become a naturalized citizen in 1869. This process also made Anna a citizen as, at that time, wives gained their citizenship through their husbands and underaged daughters through their fathers. I only have Aslak's 2nd papers though.

Berte Maria "Mary" (LYSTAD) LOVEN

Berte Maria (or in some records Bertha Mary) LYSTAD was born 29 Dec 1863 in Sørum, Akershus, Norway as Berte Maria HANSEN to Hans OLSON and Anne ANDERSDATTER. (HANSEN, OLSON, and ANDERSDATTER all being surnames based on the name of the father as explained in my last post.) My grandma (her granddaughter-in-law) has told me that she went by Mary.

Her baptismal record in the Ministralbok for Gjerdum, Akershus, Norway as Berte Maria.

From what I've gathered, Mary's father left her family around the time that she was born. While I don't know when she came to America, I suspect that she came with her mother and her older half-sister. I can say that she came sometime between 1865 (when she showed up on the census in Norway) and her marriage in 1887. I suspect her arrival was closer to 1887.

She married John LOVEN 1 Mar 1887 in Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. They had 9 children: Albert Herman on 15 Jun 1887, Adolph Melvin on 16 Oct 1887 (he went by Melvin), Henry Rudolph on 1 Oct 1890, Anga Cornelia on 6 May 1892 (she died 7 Sep 1893), Carl Alfred on 7 Dec 1893, Julius Bernard on 25 Sep 1895, Anga Cornelia Minerva on 30 Sep 1897, Hannah Violeta "Violet" on 5 Apr 1899, and Roy Philip on 17 Jun 1903.

Mary died 10 Apr 1948 in Waukon, Alamakee county, Iowa. I do have a PDF of her obit which was posted in the Decorah Journal (Decorah, Iowa) on 15 Apr 1948. She also has a memorial on findagrave.

Johannes "John" LOVEN

My great-grandfather was born as Johannes ASLAKSEN LOVEN on 2 November 1862 in Aurland, Nodre Bergenhus (now Sogn og Fjordane), Norway. At that time in Norway, surnames were based on the name of the father. Thus, ASLAKSEN means "son of Aslak." The LOVEN in his name was, at that time, the family's farm name. Simply meaning that they lived on the farm named Loven. He was born to Aslak OLSEN and Anna JOHANNESDATTER, both with the farm name of LOVEN.

From the Mineserialbok for Aurland. John is entry 49. It's been translated to "Date of birth Nov 7th, date of baptism Nov 9th, name Johannes, born in wedlock parents cotter Aslak OLSEN LOVEN and wife Anna JOHANNESDATTER, witnessess Alf MORTENSEN, Morten AUGUSTINUSSEN, Gjert OLSEN, Britha SJURSDATTER, and Monsine GJERTSDATTER LOVEN.

John left Norway 12 Apr 1869 from Bergen, Norway on the Bark Alma at the age of 6 with his parents, 2 sisters (Sigrid "Sarah" and Metta), and  1 brother (Ole). The ship landed in Quebec on 1 Jun 1869. The passenger list can be viewed at www.norwayheritage.com. On that particular list, the family is on lines 69-74 with John on line 72. He became a naturalized US citizen on 28 Oct 1880. I only have his 2nd papers at this time though.

Sometime between 1800 and 1887 the surname was changed to LOVEN. John married Berte Maria "Mary" LYSTAD on 1 Mar 1887 in Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. They had 9 children together: Albert Herman on 15 Jun 1887, Adolph Melvin on 16 Oct 1888 (who went by Melvin), Henry Rudolph on 1 Oct 1890, Anga Cornelia on 6 May 1892 (who died 7 Sep 1893), Carl Alfred on 7 Dec 1893, Julius Bernard on 25 Sep 1895, Anga Cornelia Minerva on 30 Sep 1897, Hanna Violeta "Violet" on 5 Apr 1899, and Roy Philip on 17 Jun 1903.

John became a widow 10 Apr 1948 when Mary died. He died a few months later on 4 Sep 1948 in Waukon, Allamakee county, Iowa. I do have a PDF of his obit and he has a memorial at findagrave.com.

Clarissa Benora (HENDRICKSON) LOVEN

Clarissa Benora HENDRICKSON was born 23 Oct 1893 to Martin and Andrine (EVENRUD) HENDRICKSON in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa. She married Henry Rudolph LOVEN 31 30 May 1917 in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa. You can find the information on their married life in my post about Henry which I linked to above. Clarissa died 10 Mar 1974 in Elmhurst, DuPage county, Illinois. I do have a PDF obit for her, and she has a memorial at findagrave.com. I do not, at this time, have her death certificate.

Henry Rudolph LOVEN

Henry Rudolph LOVEN was born 1 Oct 1890 in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa to Johannes "John" and Berte Maria "Mary" (LYSTAD) LOVEN. He was the 3rd of  9 children with 2 older brothers, 3 younger sisters, and 3 younger brothers. Henry married Clarissa Benora HENDRICKSON 31 30 May 1917 in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa. Henry and Clarissa had 3 children. Lloyd Roland was born 7 Jul 1918, Orval was born 13 Jan 1921, and Vivian Delores was born 3 Nov 1932. All 3 were born in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa. Henry became in widow in 1974 when Clarissa died and didn't remarry.

Henry died 29 Jun 1981 in Spring Grove, Houston county, Minnesota. His obit was in the Decorah Public Opinion (Decorah, Iowa) on 1 Jul 1981. I have a memorial for him at findagrave.com. I also have a PDF of his obit and of his and Clarissa's marriage record.

Lloyd married Susie Louise PRICE  28 Jul 1956 in Dallas, Dallas county, Texas. I'm not sure when Susie died, but she died before Lloyd did. He died 18 Feb 2011 of a heart attack. They didn't have any children.

Orval married Lois Marie  BLUME. You can find out more about him on the post I've made for him.

Vivian married Donald Otto Niemann 6 Oct 1962 in Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. Donald died 6 Aug 1993 in Newton, Harvey county, Kansas and Vivian died 4 Jan 1999 in Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota. They had 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl.

Orval Marlen LOVEN

I've decided that I want a blog just to share the information I've gathered on my family. I'll be working on my ancestry along the family lines for starters, but later may branch that out  & share newer finds & information on people I'd already blogged about. Any & all information & images I share in this blog can be used for personal, genealogical use. Also, in this blog, I'll be using the format of DD MMM YYYY for dates & last names will be in all caps to make them clear.

I'm going to start with my paternal grandfather Orval Marlen LOVEN. Other then his obit & a few census records or 2, all the information I have for him is via word of mouth and the research of Jill Teslow, the LOVEN family record keeper for as long as I can remember.

My grandpa (Orval) was born 13 Jan 1921 in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa to Henry Rudolph and Clarissa Benora (HENDRICKSON) LOVEN. Orval was the 2nd of 3 children with an older brother and a younger sister. (I'll have more information on them on Henry and Clarissa's pages.)

My grandpa (Orval) married my grandma Lois Marie BLUME 22 Jan 1950 in Belle Plaine, Scott county, Minnesota. They had 10 children together including my dad. The oldest in 1951 and the youngest in 1966. Among them was a still born daughter born on 1 Oct 1957 in Rushford, Fillmore county, Minnesota. Orval died 19 Mar 2004 on the farm in Peterson, Fillmore county, Minnesota of a cancerous brain tumor. His obit was in the Decorah, Iowa newspaper Sunday 21 Mar 2004. (I have a PDF of the online version of his obit available.) He was buried in East Grace Cemetery outside of Peterson next to his stillborn daughter.

Since all of Orval and Lois's children (other then the unnamed stillborn daughter) are still living, I won't be giving specific details on them. However their names are (in order of birth): Mark, Paul, Joel, John, James, stillborn girl, Daniel, Ruth, Elisabeth, and Philip. I also have a memorial for him on findagrave.com which includes a transcription of his obituary.

EDIT (13 Oct 2013): I decided since this is my grandpa I'd post a few of the things I can remember about him.  Throughout the entire time I can remember he used a cane. Not a store bought cane either. He'd find a branch out in the woods on the farm (where he lived), strip the bark & finish it into a cane that he used. He also enjoyed those little wind up toys that he'd have "walk" across the table. He seemed to enjoy it as much as us kids did. I invite anybody else who knew him to post memories in the comments.
