Census Sunday #5

I almost forgot this week. Also, I'm not likely to make a post next Sunday as I'll be out of town visiting a friend.

This week's census image is from the 1930 US Census for Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa, page 6B. (full image)

On this image, my relatives are on lines 63-65. It has my great grandparents Henry & Clarissa LOVEN & their family at the time. This census shows Henry as being a 39 year old county supervisor. It shows Henry as having married at the age of 26 & being born in Iowa to parents that were born in Norway. He is also on the farm schedule. His wife Clarissa (misspelled as Clarisse) is shown as being a 36 year old woman, who married at 23 & was born in Iowa to parents who were also born in Iowa. Their oldest child Lloyd is shown as being 11, born in Iowa, & having attended school. Orval (mispelled as Orvall) is shown as being 9, born in Iowa, & having attended school.

This page shows my grandpa Orval & his sister Vivian. (Orval was misspelled on the census.) Orval is shown as being 19, having graduated from high school, & having been working as a farm laborer. Vivian is shown as being 7 & having attended school, although it appears like she was in her first year of school at the time.

This census image shows the first part of the family of my great-grandparents Henry & Clarissa LOVEN (even though all 3 children were born by then) on lines 78-80. My grandpa (Orval) & the youngest (Vivian) are at the top of the next page, which I'll try to remember to make my post for next week.

The information shown on this page says that Henry was 49 at the time, completed all 4 years of high school, was born in Iowa, did work (& not for in a government emergency job) the last week of March, & that he operated a filling station. He was also on the farm schedule. The family is also shown as living in the same house in 1940 as they were in 1935. This page also shows that Clarissa (Clarisse) was 46, didn't go pass 8th grade, was born in Iowa, & was working in her own home. Lloyd is shown as being 21 (he didn't marry until 1956), single, finished 3 years of high school, & was working as a farm laborer (I'd assume on his parent's farm.)

Anders & Karine (NELSON) EVENRUD

Anders THORSTENSEN EVENRUD (see more on the naming pattern here) was born in July 1829 in Norway.

Karine NELSON was born Oct 1832 in Norway.

I currently have no information on the marriage of Anders & Karine, however, I suspect that it took place in Iowa as the 2 may not have been born in the same area of Norway. I do, however, know from the 1900 US Census that Karine was the mother of 12 children (4 I have no information on outside of this though). For the children where I do have information they had Thorvald (son) on 20 Sep 1859 (source), Pernille (daughter?) on 31 Aug 1863 (source) who died by 1870, Andrine (daughter) 9 Aug 1865, Nils (son) 3 Mar 1867 (source), Theoline (daughter) on 11 Nov 1868 (source), Caroline (daughter) in May 1870, Christine (daughter) about 1872, & Maria (daughter) about 1874.

I have no information on the deaths of either Ander or Karine at this time.

Census Sunday #2 - 1860 Glenwood twp, Winneshiek cty, IA, pg 181

This post is a little bit earlier in the day then I'll normally post, I have a few plans that'll take up most of the day though, so I'm making sure I don't forget.

As you can see in the above map, Glenwood township is directly east of Decorah & Decorah township.

This is the first census I'm posting with a direct ancestor on it. Starting on line 30 is the family (at the time) of my ggg grandparents Anders Thorstensen & Karine EVENRUD. At this point, it looks like the family was still using Anders's patronimocial name from Norway. Anders (Andrew aged 32) is shown with his wife Karine (Caroline aged 26) and the oldest of their children (to the best of my knowledge) Thorvald (Torwell aged 0). Anders was a farmer, whose real estate property (I'm assuming he owned his farm from this) was worth $640 and whose personal estate was worth $100. Using an inflation calculator from davemanuel.com, in 2013 dollars that's about $17,000 real estate & about $2,000 for his personal estate.

• Lines 12-20 - James CRANDELL, a farmer was living with Almeda (likey wife); 3 likely sons named Dwight, Lorenzo, and Lucius ; a likely daughter named Maretha R; William WALLIS(a sawyer), Jane WALLIS (likely William's wife); and Charles S WATSON (possible father-in-law).
• Lines 21-24 - Caliver (sp?) SKINNER, a farmer living with Mary (likely wife) and 2 likely daughters Lily and Alice.
• Lines 25-29 - Johannes SIMONSON, a farmer living with Martha (likely wife), a farmer named John, (likely son), Erasmus (likely son), and Ingobar JOHNSON (a "domesttic").
• Lines 33-28 - Benjamin GOODWALL, a farmer living with Louisa M (likely wife), Mary E (likely daughter), 2 likely sons Julius and Andrew, and John THOMAS (a farm laborer).
• Lines 39 and 40 - Nelson PETER, a farmer living with Ann, his likely wife.
