Census Sunday # 23 - 1940 US Census

This weeks page is from the 1940 US Census for Belle Plaine, Scott, Minnesota on page 7B. (full image) This image has many parts where the writing has faded and is hard to read.

I'm related to the household on lines 46-49, Fred and Mary BLUME. Fred is cited as a 69 year old operator of a saw mill. Mary is cited as a 56 year old woman who doesn't work outside the home. Loren is the oldest child at home and is cited as a 34 year old single man who works as a mechanic in the "wall digging industry." He's also marked as the person who gave he information to the enumerator. The only other child still at home is the youngest child, Lois (my grandma). She was cited as a 14 year old girl who had attended school in the previous month. Lois is also the only one of the 4 cited as having completed any high school, with 1 year of high school completed.

Census Sunday #17 - Winneshiek county, Iowa - 1940

I've been having some computer problems lately & as a result haven't been able to blog. Here's to getting back into it though.

This week's image is page 3B of the 1940 US Census for Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. (full image)
My great-great grandparents and the children that were living with them are on lines 48-51. John LOVEN is cited as a 77 year old farmer who was born in Norway. He owned his farm, which was valued at $5000.

Their son Melvin (first name Adolph) is cited as a 50 year old carpenter who did "private work" and had made $864 in wages or salary. Julius is cited as a 42 year old farmer working of his own accord. (I suspect that John & Julius were working together on the family farm.) The entire family was living in the same house in 1935.

This census image is from the 1940 US census for Glenwood township, Winnesheik county, Iowa page 6B. (Full image)
This census image shows the first part of the family of my great-grandparents Henry & Clarissa LOVEN (even though all 3 children were born by then) on lines 78-80. My grandpa (Orval) & the youngest (Vivian) are at the top of the next page, which I'll try to remember to make my post for next week.

The information shown on this page says that Henry was 49 at the time, completed all 4 years of high school, was born in Iowa, did work (& not for in a government emergency job) the last week of March, & that he operated a filling station. He was also on the farm schedule. The family is also shown as living in the same house in 1940 as they were in 1935. This page also shows that Clarissa (Clarisse) was 46, didn't go pass 8th grade, was born in Iowa, & was working in her own home. Lloyd is shown as being 21 (he didn't marry until 1956), single, finished 3 years of high school, & was working as a farm laborer (I'd assume on his parent's farm.)
