Hans's wife Sila BÅRDSDATTER was born 6 Sep 1827 in Lærdal, Nordre Bergenhus, Norway to Bår HOLVERSON and Synneve HALVORSDATTER. She was baptized in Lærdal on 16 Sep 1827.

I don't yet know when they were married. I'm guessing it was before they immigrated to the US though since they made the journey together. I just haven't yet found their marriage record.  In 1850, they boarded the Ørnen on their journey to their new home. They arrived in New York on 15 Jul 1850, then were in Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa by the birth of their first child in 1853.

The couple had 8 children: Anna born 3 Mar 1853, Synevva (21 Aug 1855), Henrik* (2 Jan 1858), Birthe Helen (1 Nov 1859), Henrik "Henry" (10 Aug 1862), John Martin (25 Dec 1864), Benjamin Olivius (20 May 1868), and Helmer (5 Dec 1872).

Hans died 6 Oct 1890 at the age of 74 and is buried in the Glenwood Lutheran church's cemetery. Sila lived for a few more years before dying at 76 on 1 Aug 1904. She is buried in the same cemetery as her husband.

I have found the couple on the following censuses:

  • 1860 US Census, page 195, Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa
  • 1870 US Census, page 10, Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa
  • 1880 US Census, page 16, Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa

* Their first son, the Henrik born in 1858, must have died in either 1858 or 1859. Possibly early 1860 also as he's not listed in the 1860 census.

Census Sunday # 28

This weeks image is page 474 from the 1895 Iowa State Census for Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. (full image)

On this page, I'm descended from families 36 and 37. As far as religion goes, both families are cited as being Lutheran.

Family 36 Aslak and Anna LOVEN. On this census, Aslak is cited as a 68 year old married farmer, who was born in Norway. His wife Anna was cited as a 66 year old married woman, who was born in Norway. They had 3 children living at home, Ole, Hannah, and Nels, all 3 were single at the time. Ole (26) was born in Norway. Both Hannah (23) and Nels (21) were born in Winneshiek county.

Family 37, John and Mary LOVEN. John is cited as a 32 year old married farmer, who was born in Norway. His wife Mary, was a 30 year old married woman, who was born in Norway and cited with the name Maria. John and Mary had 4 children at that point in time: Albert (7), Melvin (6), Henry (4), and Carl (1). All 4 children were born in Winneshiek county.

The other families on this page are:

  • Family 35: Edward and Maria BAAHEN
  • Family 38: John MOE, with Cornelia and Ole.

Hans and Anne LYSTAD

Hans OLESON was born 9 Jul 1841 in Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway to Ole CHRISTOPHERSON and Barbara/Barbro AMUNDSDATTER on the Lystad farm. On 29 Aug 1841, he was baptized in the Ullensaker church.

Anne was born Anne ANDERSDATTER 9 Feb 1837 to  Anders GUNLOFSEN and Anne Margrethe JOHANSDATTER and was baptized 12 Mar of the same year. All I know of her parents is that her father apparently died before she married Hans in 1864. Her life gets interesting before that.

She was the mother of 2 daughters. She had her first daughter with a man named Ole Jacob HANSON, who was living with a grocer and a baker at the time. That little girl was named Marthea, born 9 Apr 1857, and baptized on 13 Apr 1857 in Gjerdrum, Akershus, Norway. At the time of Marthea's birth and baptism, Anne and Ole never married.

A couple years later, Anne had another little girl with Hans, which they named Berte Maria. Berte (Bertha) was born 29 Dec 1863 in Akershus county, Norway.

From what the parish records show, Anne and Hans planned to be married in Dec 1863. To the best of what I can see, on the 29th, but they postponed the wedding. According to the parish record, it was postponed due to illness. If I'm getting the crossed out date correct, that "illness" was Anne giving birth to Bertha. On 10 Jan 1864, Hans and Anne did get married in Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway. Bertha was baptised at the same church on the same day. Hans and Anne must have gotten married first because Bertha was marked as legitimate in the entry of her baptism.

In Norway's 1865 census (taken in Dec), Anne is living with Hans's parents and siblings and both her girls, but not Hans. The note with Anne though says that he had been gone for about 2 years, but she didn't know where he was. So, he left his wife, step-daughter, and baby girl not long after he was married. From his marriage on, I don't even have a hint of where he went.

Sometime between 1866 and Bertha's marriage in 1887, Anne and both girls left Norway for the US. I have hints for their immigration being in 1871. I have hints saying that Anne died 25 May 1909 in Valley City, Barnes, North Dakota. The most likely grave marker for her has the surname of Olson, so I'm not sure it's her.

I have found Anne on the following censuses:

  • 1865 Norwegian census -
