Hans and Silla HENDRICKSON

Hans Ørbech HENDRICKSON was born 26 Nov 1815 in Lærdal, Nodre Bergenhus (now Sogn og Fjordane), Norway to Heinrich HANSEN and Anna OLSDATTER. A month later on 26 Dec, he was baptized in Lærdal.

Hans's wife Sila BÅRDSDATTER was born 6 Sep 1827 in Lærdal, Nordre Bergenhus, Norway to Bår HOLVERSON and Synneve HALVORSDATTER. She was baptized in Lærdal on 16 Sep 1827.

I don't yet know when they were married. I'm guessing it was before they immigrated to the US though since they made the journey together. I just haven't yet found their marriage record.  In 1850, they boarded the Ørnen on their journey to their new home. They arrived in New York on 15 Jul 1850, then were in Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa by the birth of their first child in 1853.

The couple had 8 children: Anna born 3 Mar 1853, Synevva (21 Aug 1855), Henrik* (2 Jan 1858), Birthe Helen (1 Nov 1859), Henrik "Henry" (10 Aug 1862), John Martin (25 Dec 1864), Benjamin Olivius (20 May 1868), and Helmer (5 Dec 1872).

Hans died 6 Oct 1890 at the age of 74 and is buried in the Glenwood Lutheran church's cemetery. Sila lived for a few more years before dying at 76 on 1 Aug 1904. She is buried in the same cemetery as her husband.

I have found the couple on the following censuses:

  • 1860 US Census, page 195, Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa
  • 1870 US Census, page 10, Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa
  • 1880 US Census, page 16, Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa

* Their first son, the Henrik born in 1858, must have died in either 1858 or 1859. Possibly early 1860 also as he's not listed in the 1860 census.

Census Sunday # 28

This weeks image is page 474 from the 1895 Iowa State Census for Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. (full image)

On this page, I'm descended from families 36 and 37. As far as religion goes, both families are cited as being Lutheran.

Family 36 Aslak and Anna LOVEN. On this census, Aslak is cited as a 68 year old married farmer, who was born in Norway. His wife Anna was cited as a 66 year old married woman, who was born in Norway. They had 3 children living at home, Ole, Hannah, and Nels, all 3 were single at the time. Ole (26) was born in Norway. Both Hannah (23) and Nels (21) were born in Winneshiek county.

Family 37, John and Mary LOVEN. John is cited as a 32 year old married farmer, who was born in Norway. His wife Mary, was a 30 year old married woman, who was born in Norway and cited with the name Maria. John and Mary had 4 children at that point in time: Albert (7), Melvin (6), Henry (4), and Carl (1). All 4 children were born in Winneshiek county.

The other families on this page are:

  • Family 35: Edward and Maria BAAHEN
  • Family 38: John MOE, with Cornelia and Ole.

Hans and Anne LYSTAD

Hans OLESON was born 9 Jul 1841 in Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway to Ole CHRISTOPHERSON and Barbara/Barbro AMUNDSDATTER on the Lystad farm. On 29 Aug 1841, he was baptized in the Ullensaker church.

Anne was born Anne ANDERSDATTER 9 Feb 1837 to  Anders GUNLOFSEN and Anne Margrethe JOHANSDATTER and was baptized 12 Mar of the same year. All I know of her parents is that her father apparently died before she married Hans in 1864. Her life gets interesting before that.
full image

She was the mother of 2 daughters. She had her first daughter with a man named Ole Jacob HANSON, who was living with a grocer and a baker at the time. That little girl was named Marthea, born 9 Apr 1857, and baptized on 13 Apr 1857 in Gjerdrum, Akershus, Norway. At the time of Marthea's birth and baptism, Anne and Ole never married.

A couple years later, Anne had another little girl with Hans, which they named Berte Maria. Berte (Bertha) was born 29 Dec 1863 in Akershus county, Norway.

From what the parish records show, Anne and Hans planned to be married in Dec 1863. To the best of what I can see, on the 29th, but they postponed the wedding. According to the parish record, it was postponed due to illness. If I'm getting the crossed out date correct, that "illness" was Anne giving birth to Bertha. On 10 Jan 1864, Hans and Anne did get married in Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway. Bertha was baptised at the same church on the same day. Hans and Anne must have gotten married first because Bertha was marked as legitimate in the entry of her baptism.
Hans and Anne's marriage entries. Full image

In Norway's 1865 census (taken in Dec), Anne is living with Hans's parents and siblings and both her girls, but not Hans. The note with Anne though says that he had been gone for about 2 years, but she didn't know where he was. So, he left his wife, step-daughter, and baby girl not long after he was married. From his marriage on, I don't even have a hint of where he went.

Sometime between 1866 and Bertha's marriage in 1887, Anne and both girls left Norway for the US. I have hints for their immigration being in 1871. I have hints saying that Anne died 25 May 1909 in Valley City, Barnes, North Dakota. The most likely grave marker for her has the surname of Olson, so I'm not sure it's her.

I have found Anne on the following censuses:

  • 1865 Norwegian census -

William and Henrietta POTTSCHMIDT

William POTTSCHMIDT was born about 1819 in Germany. He married Henrietta, who was born about 1821 in Germany. The couple were married in Germany.

William and Henrietta had 7 children that I know of: Friedrich W (b. abt 1840), Wilhelmina (b. 25 Sep 1843), Herman (b. abt 1845), William F (b. Apr 1847), Lizzie (b. abt 1852), Hannah (b. abt 1855), and Charles. Friedrich and Wilhelmina were born in Prussia, Herman and William were born in Ohio, and Lizzie and Hannah were born in Indiana.

UPDATES

29 November 2017

Carl and Dorothea PAGEL

Johann Charles Philipp "Carl" PAGEL was born 11 Feb 1828 in Pommern, Germany. His first marriage was to Caroline Friedricke Augustine REIMER on 24 Nov 1848, most likely in Pommern. Caroline was born 14 Dec 1826 and the couple had 2 children together: Wilhelmine Friedricke Caroline (b. 24 Sep 1849)1 and Johann Christian Carl (b. 30 Nov 1850  d. 22 Jul 1851). Caroline died 8 Mar 1851.

Carl's second marriage was to my ancestor Dorothea Caroline Friedricke Wilhelmina BATHKE. She was born 16 Feb 1830 in Pommern and went by Friedricke.

They were married 4 Oct 1852 and emigrated with their children from Hamburg 26 Mar 1873 on the British Queen to Liverpool. There they changed boats to the SS Minnesota and arrived in New York on 15 Apr 1873. After that, they settled in the Wausau, Marathon county, WI area.
Passenger list for the British Queen

Page 2, the family is on the bottom half of the page
Carl became a citizen on 26 Mar 1873.

Carl and Friedricke had 10 children that I know of together: Johann Albert Christian Fiedrich "John"2 (b. 2 Dec 1853), August Johann Albert (b. 2 Nov 1856)3, Johann Friedrich Carl "Carl" (b. 8 Feb  1859)4, Carl Friedrich Albert "Fritz" (b. 2 Feb 1861)5, Johann August "Herman" (b. 18 Dec 1864)6, Augusta Wilhelmina Carolina (b. 30 Apr 1866)7, Wilhelm August Friederich (b. Sep 1867)8, Carl Henry Frierich "Henry" (b. 21 Oct 1869), Bertha Johanne Friedricke (b. 3 Aug 1871)9, and Wilhelm Friedrich August (b. 22 Aug 1873)10. All the children but Wilhelm were born in Germany (most likely Pommern) and Wilhelm was born in Wausau, Marathon county, WI.

Friedricke died 23 Dec 1893 in Wausau and Carl died 20 Dec 1895 in Wausau. Carl was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery in Wausau. I suspect that Friedricke was buried in the same cemetery. Here's Carl's findagrave memorial.

I have the family on the following census records:

  • 1875 WI Census - (a tallied census)
  • 1880 US Census page 10 for Wausau, Marathon, WI
  • 1885 WI Census - (a tallied census)
  • 1895 WI Census - (a tallied census)

1 Wilhelmine married August BORCHARDT, had 5 children, and died 5 Feb 1918.
2 John married Mathilde KRUGER and had 4 children.
3 August married Albertine, had 9 children, and died 14 Dec 1938 in Jamestown, Stutsman, ND
4 Carl married Augusta HOEFFNER, had 4 children, and died 25 Aug 1924.

6 Herman married Bertha HOLZ, had 4 children, and died 7 Dec 1931.
7 Augusta married Julius SCHUBRING, had at least 1 child, and died 23 Jun 1900.
8 Wilhelm married Ida, had at least 3 children, and died in 1932 in Winthrop, Sibley, MN
9 Bertha died 29 Sep 1871 in Germany at a month old.
10 Wilhelm died 12 Dec 1873 in Wausau at 3 months old.

OLDENBURG - BLUME updates

I have come across a few marriage records lately.

First, the record for Charles William "Carl" OLDENBURG and Wilhelmina "Lena" GRAGERT. It confirms that they were married 26 Jul 1883 and that they were married in the Big Wood German Settlement in Scott county, Minnesota. From what I learned, Big Wood is an old name for Blakely township, where they settled and raised their family. The witnesses that signed are Fred OLDENBURG and Johanna GRAGERT.

Second, the record of Frederich BLUME and Wilhelmina POTTSCHMIDT. This record states that they were married 25th Feb 1861 at St. John church in Shakopee, Scott county, Minnesota. Unfortunately, it doesn't give the names of any witnesses. I have 2 images for this information. The second image states that they were married by the pastor of the First Evangelical Congregational Church in Shakopee.
Fred and Lena are couple number 2

Fred and Lena are the bottom couple

Third, I have the marriage record that ties these first 2 families together. The marriage of their children Fred BLUME and Maria OLDENBURG. Their marriage record cites that they were married 22 Jun 1905 in Belle Plaine, Scott, MN. The witnesses that signed for them were Arnold OLDENBURG (most likely Maria's brother Arnold) and Edward KEPP.

I'll try to go through and make sure I have all updates posted and try to remember to keep up with posting the new information I gather.

Charles and Elizabeth OLDENBURG

Charles "Carl" OLDENBURG was born 15 Apr 1828 in Germany. While, I don't have his immigration year, I know that he was naturalized between 1853 and 1857.

Elizabeth "Eliza" was born 31 Dec 1830. Her maiden name was possibly DRAEGER.

I suspect that Carl and Eliza were married about 1851 in Germany and they  had 7 children that I know of. Christine born about 1853 in Canada West (according to Census records), Charles William "Carl" born in June 1858 in Minnesota, Maria born 25 Sep 1860 in Minnesota, William born Apr 1862 in Minnesota, Elizabeth "Eliza" and Anna born about 1864 in Minnesota, and Johanna born 17 Aug 1871 in Belle Plaine, Scott cty, MN. Johanna's birth record in the Minnesota, Births and Christenings, 1840-1980 database on FamilySearch.org has her name as Hannah, although she's called John on her first census record. I suspect that all of the children born in Minnesota were born in Scott county in the Belle Plaine area.

Carl died 2 Nov 1911 in Minnesota and Eliza died 23 Sep 1904 also in Minnesota. The couple were buried at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Scott county, Minnesota.

I have the family on the following censuses:

  • 1857 MN Territorial Census in Jordan, Scott county
  • 1860 US Census in Belle Plaine, Scott county, Minnesota
  • 1870 US Census in Belle Plaine
  • 1875 MN Census in Blakely township, Scott county, Minnesota
  • 1880 US Census in Blakely township
  • 1885 MN Census in Blakely township
  • 1900 US Census in Blakely township

I also have the patent for land Carl bought in Blakely township in 1864 as a PDF that I'm willing to share.

Pagel Immigration

I just today found the passenger list for my ggg grandma and grandpa Pagel (and my gg grandpa Pagel). They left Germany for England (I don't know the details on this part of their voyage) and, from Liverpool, sailed to New York on the SS Minnesota. They arrived at the port of New York on 15 April 1873. They then went to Wisconsin and settled in Marathon county near Wausau. Their son, my gg grandpa Carl "Henry" PAGEL, eventually went to Minnesota and settled in the area of McLeod, Renville, and Sibley counties. The family is on the second page of the ship's manifest.

Page 1
Page 2, The family is on the bottom half of the page
It shows the parents (Johann "Carl" and Dorothea "Fredericke" PAGEL) as 42 and 38 respectfully with Carl's occupation listed as "farmer." The children are listed in the manifest as John 19 (Johann), Augte 16 (August)1, Fernd? 14 (Carl "Fred")2, Carl 103, Augte 7 (Augusta), and Carl 3 (Carl "Henry").

Here is the link to the first page of the manifest at archives.org. From there, you can page through the rest of the manifest if you choose to.

1 For some reason August is listed as female. Maybe with all the kids the person writing the list got confused. It's also possible that August came over on his own and had a twin sister named Augusta I don't now about that came over with the rest of the family. That would also explain why the occupation is listed as "spinster."
2 I think they were trying to go for Friedrich here.
3 This may be a child I wasn't aware of, or could be Johann "Herman", whom I have as 8 at the time, but either this or the census records I got his age from could be a little off. I only have 1 middle name for him, while all his siblings have 2.

I'm related to family number 31 on this census, the family of William (W.W.) & Sylvia WELLS.

The census says that 6 year old Leonard (another ancestor of mine) was born in New York. The youngest son, Chester is cited as 1 and born in Iowa. Both Stanley and Leonard are cited as having attended school. The family also has a Lucinda Tucker, aged 65, living with them. I'm sorry I don't know why she's with them at this point. My best guess is that she's Sylvia's mother.

Census Sunday #19 - 1900 US Census

This week, the census image is from the 1900 US census for Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, Iowa, page 1A. (full image)

On this page, my ancestors are on lines 37-40. Aslak LOVEN is cited as a 73 year old farmer who was born in June 1926 in Norway & immigrated in 1869, becoming a naturalized citizen later. He did own his own farm at the time of the census also. Aslak is cited as being married to his wife Anna for 43 years. Anna is cited as a 76 year old woman who was born in June 1928 in Norway. She was cited as the mother of 7 children, all living in 1900. (I think that was a mis-communication as I have evidence supporting only 6 children, which includes a family photo.) For children that were still living at home, there was Ole and Hannah. Ole was cited as a 32 year old farm laborer that was born in March 1868 in Norway. Hannah was cited as a 26 year old servant who was born in Oct 1873 in Iowa. Everybody in the family was able to read, but Aslak was the only one not cited as able to write or speak English.
